Minimalist Agentic Coding

A simple, powerful AI workflow that actually ships.

No complicated tooling. No fragile framework spaghetti. Just a frontier model, an agent harness, and a handful of atomic skills chained into a single meta-skill: /shipit.

The video below documents this exact website being designed, clarified, tested, versioned, and deployed to AWS in real time using the workflow explained below.

Proof of concept in action: From a blank directory to automated testing, version tagging, S3 static hosting, CloudFront CDN, and Route 53 DNS records in a single /shipit invocation.

My AI workflow is pretty simple, but it's also very powerful and effective. It contains only the following parts:

Foundation

Start with the model + harness

Pick the frontier model provider + harness of your choice. I switch between them as need/interest dictates, and this setup works with all of them, including having the mid-tier models ship entire features or collections of features.

Tooling

Just add these skills

You don't need a sprawling collection of plugins or heavyweight orchestrators. Five atomic skills provide everything needed for end-to-end development:

goal Persistence

Does what you ask, no matter how long it takes, until it's done.

clarify Alignment

Like grill-me, but even simpler, as it trusts the smarter models we have today to work out many of the specifics instead of me needing to answer more questions.

rebuild Verification

Detect and run test suites/ci, linting tools, binary builds (if applicable).

wrapup Release Engineering

Adds any changed files to source control, reviews .gitignore in case it needs to be updated to ignore any new sensitive (credentials) or ephemeral (logs, build artifacts), bumps the version, and commits + pushes code.

redeploy Production

Idempotently deploy or redeploy the application I'm working on. I usually create a bin/deploy script that's specific to the application so that the model just has to figure out that it just needs to call that script, but some applications are more complex.

Meta-Skill

The Meta-Skill: shipit

Then I have a meta-skill that calls /goal /clarify /rebuild /wrapup /redeploy ... and this meta skill is called shipit.

bash
>/shipit Build a landing page for simpleai.jefflunt.com
# 1. clarify asks 1-2 blocker questions & confirms assumptions
# 2. rebuild compiles assets & passes CI tests
# 3. wrapup backfills docs, bumps version, commits, tags, and pushes
# 4. redeploy runs bin/deploy to S3 + CloudFront + Route53
"So, I describe what I want, call /shipit, and the model not only asks me any clarifying questions, as soon as we're both on the same page it just takes care of literally the entire rest of the process. No complicated tooling, no special tools. Just me, my agent harness, and a handful of skills."
